ARTIFICIAL SWEETENERS
(everyone needs to read this!)
NO Artificial sweeteners IN MY BODY! Please make this your mantra! Here’s why. These man-made dangerous chemicals are unnatural, unnecessary, insufficiently tested, and have a long history of causing health problems. In short, they are all, in my opinion, legalized poison. You see these pretty pastel packets everywhere—they are pink, yellow, blue and green. And make no mistake, they are everywhere—in lots of food and drink & chewing gum items.
In order to fully grasp what this is all about---let’s do a quick review of what it means to be a sugar (a.k.a. sweetener). Within the nutrient category, ‘carbohydrates’ (CHO), there are 2 main categories: simple & complex.
Simple sugars are just that—simple! They only have 1 (mono) or 2 (di) saccharides. Consumption of these carbohydrates by themselves causes hyperglycemia (high blood sugar) followed by hypoglycemia (low blood sugar)—otherwise known as the CRASH and BURN effect. Generally, words that end in –ose (glucose, fructose, sucrose, dextrose, maltose) are simple sugars.
Complex starches are a little more complex! These polysaccharides are bigger molecules. Therefore they take longer to digest. This equates to stable energy levels rather than CRASH and BURN!
Most of our CHO intake should be in the form of complex (veggies).
A little simple CHO are ok—but always choose the health promoting options such as whole fresh organic fruit, and if you need to use a sweetener, evaporated organic cane juice, stevia (South American herb), and organic raw honey are your best choices.
A note to people who are overweight, have high blood pressure, high blood sugar or other health challenges: for the most part, minimize fruit consumption & maximize veggie consumption until these challenges are under control.
So, how did ARTIFICIAL SWEETENERS become so popular??
As some scientists were revealing the correlation between excess sugar intake and various degenerative diseases, other scientists were accidentally discovering artificial sweeteners. The opportunists saw thousands of vulnerable unhealthy people searching for an alternative! Now, a billion dollar industry exists.
What are the artificial sweeteners? Saccharin, cyclamate, aspartame, acesulfame-K, sucralose, alitame, neotame, truvia & purevia. Another one that I’m going to add to this list currently has a 20+ million dollar ad campaign to tell us how ‘natural’ it is—High Fructose Corn Syrup. There is nothing natural about this product. Notice the ads from Pizza Hut and Snapple who have removed HFCS from their products. I predict more companies will follow. But please understand that these same companies who produce this toxic substance have other toxins to replace it with---see truvia below…
A brief history of each one:
SACCHARIN:
*1879-Dr. Ira Remsen and a fellow researcher were in the lab at Johns Hopkins. They were experimenting with toluene derivatives. Toluene is a hazardous chemical produced in the process of making gasoline from crude oil. A little was spilled on his hand & accidentally ingested, later on his food tasted different. An industry was born. Enter …saccharin.
In 1901, Monsanto was created for production of this poison. 1903, Coca-cola became Monsanto’s client. In 1912, saccharin was banned due to public health concerns. In 1914, the sugar rationing of WWI created a need for alternatives and the ban was lifted.
Today, you can find it in your local restaurant in a pretty pink packet.
Sweet ‘n Low is now aspartame and dextrose.
*1970’s—Saccharin was found to cause bladder cancer in lab animals.
Canada outlawed it. The US FDA tried to outlaw it but Big Food stepped in and convinced Congress to allow them to poison Americans (so in microscopic font, people were warned—kind of like ‘side effects’ on pharmaceutical drugs).
*2000-President Clinton signed a new law that cancer warnings weren’t necessary anymore since a 1992 ‘study’ showed that rats were physiologically different from humans.

CYCLAMATE:
*1937-Univ. of Illinois grad student was in the lab trying to create fever reducing drugs. Enter cyclamate.
*1957-The pink packet was born. Sweet ‘n Low was a mix of saccharin and cyclamate.
*1969-FDA banned cyclamate. It caused cancer in mice.

ASPARTAME:
*1965-The birth of the blue packet!—ASPARTAME*** got its start in a lab as a drug to treat peptic ulcer disease. Also known as Nutrasweet & Equal.
***there have been more reports of adverse reactions to aspartame than all other food additives combined.
*1977-FDA initiated the first ever criminal investigation of the manufacturers of this toxin, Searle Company (there have been many more since, especially with pharmaceuticals). Donald Rumsfeld became CEO.
*1979-FDA said that aspartame should not be approved due to the ‘brain tumor in animals’ findings.
*1981-Don’s buddy was elected President and Ronnie Reagen replaced the FDA commissioner with Dr. Hayes. Aspartame was approved and Dr. Hayes later was on the payroll of Searle.
Why so toxic? Excitotoxicity—which is excessive firing of neurons in your brain and spinal cord causing cell death. Dr. Russell Blaylock writes about this. For more, research Dr. H. J. Roberts—the authority on aspartame.
ACESULFAME-K
*1967-Acesulfame-K (aka ‘sunett’) was discovered in a lab.
*1988-FDA approved it for limited use.
*1998-FDA approved it for beverages. It is listed on many chewing gum packages. It is a carcinogen.

SUCRALOSE
*1975-Hello Sucralose (aka ‘Splenda’)! In a London lab, these chemists were trying to create insecticides. So they mixed some toxic chlorine with some sugar. Now, instead of bugs being poisoned, people are.
*1980- Tate & Lyle sold manufacturing rights to the beloved Johnson & Johnson. J&J created McNeil Nutritionals LLC for the marketing of Splenda products.
*1991- Canada approved sucralose.

*1998-US approved sucralose. Interesting timing here, notice the 7 year gap. Monsanto’s patent for aspartame was getting ready to expire, so they needed to get Neotame (below) approved. They fully expected the FDA to accommodate their request. They didn’t expect that the FDA would also approve Sucralose (splenda). Bummer for them—have you ever heard of neotame? Didn’t think so.
ALITAME:
*1979-Alitame was developed by Pfizer—not approved yet in the US. However, in some 3rd world countries, where Pfizer famously experiments on humans with pharmaceuticals, it is approved.

NEOTAME:
*1997-Neotame was developed by Monsanto since the patent for aspartame was running out. It was approved. It is aspartame plus 3-di-methyl-butyl. This is found in the EPA’s list of ‘most hazardous chemicals’. Recently, it has been ‘reissued’ and touted as ‘the latest & greatest new artificial sweetener’.

Stevia:
Stevia is an unpatentable shrub. The species is Stevia rebaudiana. You can order it through your local nursery.
The artificial sweetener industry has pushed hard to block this herb into the food supply. They are very powerful, the FDA has turned down repeated requests to allow the use of stevia in food. Stevia has been an ‘outlaw’—people have gotten searched, and seized. Embargoes on importation were in place from 1991 until they were lifted in 1995 under the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act. Since then, the FDA has had a split personality stance regarding stevia. They say it is can be used as a ‘dietary supplement’ but not as a ‘food additive’...
So, if you are a BIG FOOD company, what are you going to do?
Figure out a way to patent the unpatentable!---
ENTER TRUVIA:
Brought to you by the manufacturers of High Fructose Corn Syrup, and most of the cattle slaughterhouses in the US: the Cargill company has partnered with Coca-cola to bring you truvia.
It is made with rebiana, erythritol and ‘natural flavors’ (red flag).
Rebiana is Cargill’s tradename for this stevia-based sweetener.
Also, looks a lot like the 2nd name of the species, rebaudiana. Clever.
Here's what they are doing: THEY ARE CAPITALIZING ON THE POPULARITY OF STEVIA....AND REBRANDING IT AFTER MUTILATING IT WITH OTHER CHEMICALS like
the 3rd mystery ingredient, 'natural flavors'--that one is always scary.......(that could be a blend of all the other toxic sweeteners--we don't know since they are not listing them!!!)—I actually contacted the company 2 different times and gave them an opportunity to divulge the ingredients to me. They would not—since it is ‘proprietary information’. I wasn’t surprised.

PUREVIA:
This is Pepsi’s version of truvia.
Mark my words, you will start to see a million dollar ad campaign for these and other stevia inspired artificial sweeteners.

There are a few not-so-natural steps involved transforming corn into HFCS...
1. Enzymes...2 of which are genetically modified.
2. Liquid Chromatography, which is a laboratory technique for the separation of mixtures.
3. Then it is mixed up with the original stuff so that the blend is mostly fructose (as contrasted with glucose or sucrose). There are basically 3 different types of HFCS, depending on their glucose/sucrose/fructose ratios.
Here's the deal....it is cheap, abundant & subsidized by the government.

3. Then it is mixed up with the original stuff so that the blend is mostly fructose (as contrasted with glucose or sucrose). There are basically 3 different types of HFCS, depending on their glucose/sucrose/fructose ratios.
Here's the deal....it is cheap, abundant & subsidized by the government.
4 companies control 85% of this 2.6 billion dollar biz. Cargill (latest product is truvia) is one of these 4 companies. Collectively, these companies make up the Washington D.C.-based Corn Refiners Association. They are the masterminds behind the current 20 million dollar high fructose corn syrup ad campaign. I don’t think it is working since they are in the process of changing the name (!) to ‘corn sugar’.
Bottom line= They are taking corn (glucose), chemically altering it (to fructose) thereby making it harder for the liver to digest. This cumulative toxic effect trashes the liver causing a build-up of toxins in the entire body. This is why so many kids are getting Type 2 Diabetes.
